Matt Waite Pottery
My pottery studio is in a converted cow shed at Stowford Manor Farm, just a couple of miles down the lane from Westwood towards Farleigh Castle and then along the river.
I established the pottery in 2000.
Before arriving at Stowford, I studied for a ceramics degree in Bristol in the mid 1980’s, followed in the 1990’s by working in potteries in Bath – Walcot Pottery and Iona Pottery on the Isle of Iona in the Hebrides. I worked as a production potter (throwing a range of wares all day every day!) which was invaluable in improving and honing my skills.
My pots have changed and evolved over the years and the pots that you can see here are a good representation of the tablewares that I have designed since arriving at Stowford. I make and develop all my glazes which can include wood ash, dug clay and estuary mud. I throw with a Cornish clay which is very durable, being fired to 1300°C. The firing process is quite a labour of love, taking 18 hours or so, starting at 2am and running until 8pm.

I teach winter courses at Marsh Farm Pottery, Hilperton. These are ‘improvers’ courses for people with throwing experience. There are also courses for beginners. www.marshfarmpottery.co.uk
